Secondary Repairs of Deformities of Repaired Cleft Lip

Abstract
Secondary deformities of the repaired cleft lip and nose result from several distinct but related components of congenitally abnormal tissues, surgically modified tissue, the innate tendency of tissue to reflect its phenotype, the absence of diverse tissue elements, and the effects of growth and development. So, the diversity of secondary deformities following repair of the cleft lip and nose is striking.
Whereas primary repairs of the cleft lip has become increasingly successful, repair of the cleft lip nose has continued to be a difficult problem. And no single procedure which has been developed to date has given sufficiently good results to provide a standard approach to the problem of the cleft lip nose deformity. Thus the surgeon must be familiar with the wide range of available methods in order to choose the appropriate procedure for each individual patient¢¥s deformity.
The timing of secondary operation is controversy. Recently, however, many surgeons would like to do secondary operation for cleft lip deformity and minor cleft lip-nose defore the child goes to school, but extended corrected nasal surgery should be deferred until nasal growth has been completed.
In this article, a review was made on the deformities of repaired cleft lip and and cleft lip-nose, and several surgical techniques of secondary repairs was mentioned including author¢¥s own method.
